Sanctuary Animals

Kitty and K-9 Connection -- A New Leash On Life

From time to time an animal comes into foster that for one reason or another becomes a sanctuary pet. This may be due to medical issues, previous placement failure and returned, too skittish or they are elderly. Because of our commitment to these rescued animals, these particular dogs or cats become sanctuary animals who will remain in KKC for the remainder of their lives. Occasionally, someone will inquire about adopting a sanctuary animal… that is certainly possible. You may wish to sponsor one of our sanctuary animals… please let us know and we will acknowledge your sponsorship under that pet.

For $10 a month, you can sponsor one of the animals listed below for as long as you like. This sponsorship will help pay for food, medical needs, litter, etc. If you are interested in sponsoring one of our sanctuary animals, please contact Carol at kkc.carol@alaska.net

Amos was initially rescued from Animal Control (ACC) in 2007.  He went into a loving home… but apparently the relationship ended… in the separation, Amos lost out and was returned to rescue.  He did adjust to his familiar foster home, but remains obviously saddened by the change.  What a shock… he went from being a "special" member of a family to being one in a pack again.  Amos longs for a home of his own… arms to cuddle him… kind words of encouragement and the ability to believe he will be cherished for his life-time.  He will happily share ALL his heart and soul, but for now, the saddness in his eyes is sometimes overwhelmingly heartbreaking.  Amos' return was welcomed by us… he is a great guy in oh so many ways.  He is not intrusive but is absolutely delighted to be offered a chance to share space on your lap and to warm a small area of the couch or bed beside you.  His heart is huge but seems somewhat fragile… the diagnosis, he would improve greatly in a loving home of his own where he can adore the people who love him.  His comical personality will emerge again and he will bring smiles and joy into your life… and you can restore his broken heart!  Amos is a dog that shows his appreciation for ANYTHING you do for him… he needs a great home with lots of love… please give him that chance again!

MIKE*

This is one fiesty, active and lots of fun little senior dog.  He was rescued from Animal Control over two years ago… he was so fearful.  What a challenge this has been for him. He is a typical terrier who gets along with dogs his size but has to boss the bigger dogs and torment the cat... he quickly became familiar with the squirt bottle. Qualities include cuddly but not intrusive, snuggler in bed, not very barky, happy to have lap time but the back of the couch is okay too, seems fragile but is actually hardy, full of life and curiousity, a bit pushy for people food (alto' not real successful) and willing to endure kisses.  This little guard dog chooses to believe that "senior" is only physical but not always a state of mind... he firmly believes he is still quite youthful. The joys of life keep him happy and entertained. Placement opportunities for Mikey seem to be nil to none… except for his foster family that absolutely adore this fiesty little dog.  They had no problem finding room in their hearts for this little man.  Mikey adjusted to his new life-style and happily tries to take control of the pack (to help out of course).  He tends to be on the losing end of those challenges tho' but that does not stop him at all.  Life would be boring without a scrap or two now and then… smile.

Name:

AUGIE (the doggie)*

augieRescue was called to Animal Control in early June of 2008... to assess this dog for "rescued"… he was a medical mess.  He was nearly hairless, his ears were split, his skin raw, scabby, sore and infected, blind in one eye and the other eye was infected, etc.  He looked and felt horrible... deemed "not adoptable" by Animal Control - what did rescue think?  Aw heck… give him another chance… rescued! It took awhile but he eventually got much better.  He is a darn sweet, lap-hugging, happy Pin who still sports his ears and tail (nothing cropped or docked). He needed a "good food" diet (no beef or wheat) throughout his life-time so he won't get itchy or be prone to additional infections. Augie is (on his terms) cuddly and snuggly, people friendly (no smaller children), loves to run with the other dogs and play, can be a bit bossy with other dogs and people at times, a bit too interested in the cats, can wag his tail with lots of enthusiasm (cuz he has one to wag... smile), somewhat independent and makes the best lap warmer anyone could ever want or need.  He still has health issues... but they aren't insurmountable.  He definitely improved with a good diet and medications - he will continue to improve with lots of love and health-caring parents.  After months of treatment... he does disagree when getting ear drops, eye drops, medication rubs, etc. (altho' he loves tummy rubs)... guess he has a right to be a bit darn tired of the whole mess... do you blame him? Still a bit pitiful looking but a great little guy.  He is definitely not the dog for everybody, but he is the dog for somebody.  Who is that "somebody" you ask? - well his foster family eventually realized he was not going anywhere.

ROK*

rokThe picture is not good.  If you met Rok in person, you would agree you have never seen such a handsome Miniature Pinscher/Manchester Terrier.  He was quite surprised to find himself at Animal Control where he was owner released because they were "moving". Rok could not understand why such a thing would happen to him or why he would be "dumped" after six years of devoted companionship. He is awesome; well behaved, not intrusive but likes lap time and companionship, fairly quiet, enjoys irritating the cats a bit, likes to ride and take walks and generally a very good natured gentleman. His true desire was to find his own home where he could settle down and share the rest of his life with people who care and appreciated him for the great dog he is… but that did not happen the way we expected.  This gentleman would make an excellent companion and any owner proud, but no one came forward to adopt him.  Instead, after over two years in foster, his terrific foster parents realized he had fit right in and they had opened their hearts to him completely.  They enjoy Rok's antics, his loving nature and his comical ways… he wormed his way right into their hearts and lives.  Rok is one happy dog now; life has many twists and turns - this was better than he had imagined!

Name:

DON*

Sex:

donThis handsome red-haired little guy was rescued from the Fairbanks Animal Control after arriving there as a stray. It was deemed that rescue should intervene cuz he was a "bit nippy". He stepped off the airplane into my foster mom's arms the end of March - over two years ago. He does well with other dogs, can be somewhat growly towards humans (initially) when they attempt to pick him up, great with adults and older children (not small children), very cuddly (once he is familiar with his people), curious, snuggly, fond of sleeping on the bed, still spunky and playful, enjoys sunbathing, can be intrusive at times but very loving and (for a Min-Pin) fairly gentle natured.  He is still quite sturdy and healthy; he does sport a Min-Pin attitude sometimes.  Due to his age, Don did not find that special family or person who will spoil him and love him for a life-time.  God granted him a second chance and he continues to take full advantage of that opportunity.  Knowing that his age has kept him from placement and having shared more than two years of his spunky little life, Don is welcome to remain in foster care with the foster family he has grown to know and love.  If by any chance, you would like to consider Don as a potential new addition to your life, that is still definitely a welcomed opportunity that he would truly appreciate!
